In our increasingly busy and cluttered lives, let’s take a few moments to appreciate our fellow human beings who are detail-oriented. You know who I mean. They are the people who notice and care about the small things everyone else overlooks. For me, it shows up as noticing every misspelled word in a document. I am incapable of leaving them there without come sort of comment, even if it is only to myself. It really helps to be in a job or have a boss who appreciates this trait.
Yahoo Answers says: “It's an important characteristic for an employee at any level. For an entry-level employee, it might just mean not ignoring phone calls, not letting the work station get messy, or not continuing the private phone call without noticing your boss walked into the room. Bottom line: it's all the same thing. If you don't notice and pay attention to the small details, you won't be as good at the job as you might have been.”
Another definition is “an individual who has an eye for details and making a conscious effort to understand the actual cause behind an occurrence happens to be his second nature.”
“Someone with a detail oriented personality has:
· Natural keenness to dwell upon the topic under consideration and exploring the reasons behind the cause
· Patience and perseverance for pursuing the problem till the reason has been exposed
· Pro-activeness to ideate and initiate plans for corrective actions”
Sometimes it is tough to take pride in sweating the small stuff. Not everyone likes having mistakes pointed out to them. Detail-minded people can be annoying, no matter how pure their motivation. That makes life a little difficult sometimes, since it is not a something that can be turned off. Some of us are born with the detail button permanently switched “On”.
So when you finish reading this, go find someone in your life who notices the little things and tell them they are appreciated. I guarantee they will remember the day you said “Thank you.”
